Sarah had taken the time after her attempt to place the IV to comfort the granddaughter and gave her a hug and, quite literally, a shoulder to cry on.
I have seen Sarah come to many of my patients throughout the year, and she has always been positive and supportive of the patient and family, any time she has been called. Specifically, this morning, in April of 2025, Sarah was called to place an ultrasound-guided IV in a patient who was belligerent from their dementia and a particularly "hard stick". She was ultimately unsuccessful due to the patient becoming annoyed and refusing care.
The granddaughter who had stayed the night with the patient became distraught because she was watching her beloved grandmother lose her mind. Sarah had taken the time after her attempt to place the IV to comfort the granddaughter and gave her a hug and, quite literally, a shoulder to cry on. I was moved by this gesture of humanity, as I have been from many of her other encounters.
Sarah shows compassion towards her patients and their troubles, as well as empathy towards their families during hard times. She always explains what she is going to do before doing anything, acknowledging and entertaining any concerns the patient or family may have. She maintains the patient's and the family's dignity at all times. Not only does she have an incredible knowledge base and experience, but she is also clearly very passionate about what she does. Sarah puts 110% into every encounter and always puts the needs of others before her own.
