Sarita took special care to lift my spirits, downplay my weaknesses, and educate me about the pathway to improvement on the ward and subsequently in rehabilitation.
Having been hospitalized 14 times in my 81 years and as a cancer survivor (3 kinds) my comparative sample of caregivers is solid. Without reservation, I rank Sarita as the epitome of excellence in her field. During my stay following a stint in the ICU, Sarita took special care to lift my spirits, downplay my weaknesses, and educate me about the pathway to improvement on the ward and subsequently in rehabilitation. Not once can I recall a terse answer or limited response to a question. She always tolerated my inquiries with a serious demeanor until she was assured that I had a full understanding of the issue at hand.

Always firm and factual, it was clear that she took her responsibilities very seriously and performed as a consummate professional. No talks were too minor. At the end of each shift, Sarita would bring in her replacement, introduce me, and review my situation with her colleagues, who had great respect for this exceptional caregiver.

Sarita also motivated me to try sitting, standing, using the bathroom facilities, and coordinating the efforts of the PT and OT practitioners.  They, too, lent credence to the positive relationship between her and other Zablocki hospital staff members. She presented this same demeanor to the many visitors who came to see me during my stay.  When necessary, she asked them to leave the room in a respectful and pleasant manner and then invited them to come back in once her procedure had been completed.

In my humble opinion, Sarita can only be characterized as an exceptional nursing role model. She also made it clear that her commitment to the VA and Zablocki was very strong and that she “loved her job and the people she worked with.” I am indebted to her for the wonderful care I received and for smoothing the road to my recovery.
