February 2026 Honoree
Satya Garcia, BSN, RN
When my husband suffered a traumatic ski accident in VT that fractured his left hip and required a total hip arthroplasty, our world shifted overnight.
What began as an orthopedic injury quickly became far more frightening when he developed serious post-operative complications — hypoxia, uncontrolled pain, and delirium — that the initial hospital in Vermont was not equipped to manage. His transfer to NYU felt like our last hope for rescuing him.
From the moment he arrived on Tisch 16W, we felt the difference. Every member of the care team demonstrated extraordinary professionalism and skill. But one nurse, Satya Garcia, became our steady light during an incredibly vulnerable and frightening time.
Satya cared for my husband during the first two nights of his stay — nights that could easily have been chaotic and traumatic. Instead, because of her, they were calm, safe, and healing.
She brought not only clinical excellence but a deep and genuine compassion that we will never forget.
She administered his pain medication promptly and thoughtfully, always staying ahead of his discomfort. She was confident and efficient, yet never rushed.
What moved us most was the dignity she preserved for him. Even while he was in severe pain and experiencing some delirium, Satya spoke to him with respect. She included him in decisions, honored his autonomy, and empowered him in the one area he could still control — his pain management. In moments when he was most vulnerable, she grounded him with patience and kindness.
My daughters never left his side; they share my sentiment about 16W and Satya.
As his wife, watching someone you love suffer and feel out of control is heartbreaking. Satya gave our family reassurance; she gave us trust. She gave us peace in the middle of a crisis.
Her presence was not just professionally exceptional — it was profoundly human. We truly believe her compassionate and skilled care was instrumental in stabilizing him and setting the foundation for his recovery.
Satya Garcia embodies everything the DAISY Award represents. Our family will carry deep gratitude for her for the rest of our lives.
