Saul came in there and spoke to him in such a manner that it eased my troubled heart. He was gentle, caring, and took his time assessing him.
Saul was the night shift nurse caring for my brother. I am very protective of him as he has severe Down Syndrome with Dementia. He also doesn’t follow commands or communicate his needs or wants.

Saul came in there and spoke to him in such a manner that it eased my troubled heart. He was gentle, caring, and took his time assessing him. You could see my brother’s features follow him around the room, and he would smile or laugh. The next night, he came in, and my brother instantly perked up upon seeing him enter his room. My brother doesn’t take easily to strangers, and when he smiles at people, those are the people he feels safe with.

Saul noticed a drastic change in my brother’s condition. I hadn’t noticed with the lights low. One of his eyes was almost completely dilated, and he began gathering information for a thorough examination. Saul was gracious enough to let me examine his eyes. He was able to rule out any neurological issues. It was determined that my brother’s condition had a reaction to the breathing treatments from his mask being too big and his moving his head. The medication had gotten in his eye, causing the dilated pupils.

Both nights, I was able to sleep knowing that my brother was in safe hands in the ICU. Saul was able to look past my brother's disability to comfort and soothe him while talking to him as he would a pediatric child.
