I have had the pleasure of knowing Savanna since fall 2017 and observed her in NUR 201, NUR 403 & NUR 470. Additionally, I recall conversations with her NUR 205 & 305 instructors about her well-prepared and conscientious practice as a student nurse. Therefore, I feel that Savanna meets the DAISY award criteria in the following ways:  In NUR 201, Savanna was new to nursing but was consistently prepared, calm, and empathetic with every patient. She was committed to being prepared to provide care on every clinical day.  In NUR 403, Savanna was part of Hood Million Hearts®. Of the 17 students who have been trained as Million Hearts® Fellows, Savanna was clearly a student who "owned" the program and her participants. She was diligent in connecting with and coaching participants who were struggling to make healthier lifestyle choices and conscientiously supported each of them with the individual resources they needed to make choices. I also observed this same thoughtfulness and ownership at the Fall 2020 Community Health Fair. Our community partners there thought she was the one in charge because she displayed confidence and a willingness to serve participants (I don't think she sat down at all that day!). Despite client barriers in language and knowledge, Savanna was able to comfort fears among participants who were there for guidance and care.  During her NUR 470 practicum, I observed Savanna with a very difficult post-op patient who was demonstrating pain and anxiety in an unkind manner. It is more challenging to be an empathetic nurse in these situations, but Savanna demonstrated sensitivity and compassion without hesitation. She was focused on safe care and did not display any signs of being shaken. Her preceptor, Claudia Cruz, BSN, RN shares (via email 4/4/20):  "Savanna is always going above and beyond for her patients and the people she works with. Her enthusiasm is contagious and she is constantly on the look-out for ways she can help. "Overall, Savanna has taken her nursing education very seriously and has worked extremely hard to become a competent nurse. Despite some challenges along the way, she has always been self-aware and willing to make changes, calm and empathic toward patients and professional with faculty and fellow students.
