Many nurses would've just left that up to the wound care nurse for first education, but Savannah was knowledgeable and confident in the education she provided.
Savannah was my mother's night shift nurse multiple nights in a row. My mother had an ostomy placed, which is not only a physically altering surgery, but it is psychologically and psychosocially altering as well. It involves a lot of education and reassurance in the immediate post-op time. Mom had this surgery on a Thursday night, going into a holiday weekend. Savannah spent her first 2 nights with my mom, fighting pain control and IV access. Savannah spent her last two nights educating my mom on various aspects of the ostomy, including how to change the bag, how to burp the bag, and when and how to empty it. Many nurses would've just left that up to the wound care nurse for first education, but Savannah was knowledgeable and confident in the education she provided. Savannah was unable to allow mom to sleep/rest her first 2 nights due to medical necessity, but balanced her need for rest and education to provide both in the following nights. As a daughter, I was grateful for Savannah's care and attention. As a nurse, I felt assured leaving my mother in Savannah's care.
