I had the pleasure of being assigned to Scarlett for my last clinical day in CVICU. Scarlett is a seasoned nurse, with tons of knowledge and unfazed by the tremendous pressures of critically ill patients. No Scarlett O'Hara here, this pro can assess a patient, converse with the family members and integrate teaching all in a five-minute window.
What I really learned from Scarlett is how to be a great nurse. I feel like I tapped into a whole different level of nursing. She connected with each patient and family member. She spoke with each person with a caring and professional tone.
The attributes that Scarlett demonstrates are those of a nurse leader. She spoke with physicians in a straightforward, concise and coherent manner. Her solid, effective communication skills garner a sense of safety and security for patients, family, and team members.
Amid the stressful atmosphere of CVICU, Scarlett was an island of emotional stability. Several patients surrounding her rooms were critically ill, and she jumped in to assist with ease. I noted she never asked what to do, but would calmly walk in and begin working alongside others as if they had practiced this dance many times.
I feel fortunate, as a student nurse, to have spent time with Scarlett. She practices her skills in a way that I can only hope to practice one day.
