Schef’s dedication to both patient care and family advocacy exemplifies the very best of nursing.
It is with great respect and admiration that I nominate my colleague, Scheifren Ramos, for the DAISY Award. Schef's exceptional compassion, clinical insight, and unwavering dedication to both his patient and the patient's family go beyond the boundaries of typical nursing care. His actions truly exemplify the core values of nursing and the spirit of advocacy, making a profound impact on a family in crisis.
He cared for a U.S. Marine veteran who had suffered a hemorrhagic stroke, leaving him unresponsive and unable to recognize his wife. His wife, a recent immigrant, was overwhelmed and struggling to care for him while also supporting their son, who was undergoing cancer treatment. Despite the language barrier, Schef listened to her concerns and, recognizing her husband’s status as a veteran, encouraged her to seek benefits through the VA. Thanks to Schef’s guidance, the family discovered they were eligible for health insurance, disability pay, housing assistance, and even a VA-funded home. This not only alleviated their financial strain but also ensured their son could continue cancer treatment without worry. Schef’s dedication to both patient care and family advocacy exemplifies the very best of nursing. His actions have made a lasting difference in their lives, showing that nursing is about much more than bedside care—it’s about being an advocate when it matters most.
