Without a second thought, Scott and his son loaded the man's wheelchair into his van and gave him a ride home.
If you ever have the opportunity to meet Scott Halquist, you know what a bright light he is to our patients and their families. I'd like to share a story about how one act of kindness spread to fill the hearts of many.
Scott and his son made a stop at the pharmacy at ORMC on his day off when he noticed a gentleman in a motorized wheelchair stranded on the sidewalk. Scott and his son pulled over and asked the man if he could help in any way. The gentleman told Scott that he lives close by and was trying to make it home when his wheelchair died. He continued to explain that he needed to get home to pick up his truck. His wife was being discharged from the burn unit and is waiting for him to come to pick her up. Without a second thought, Scott and his son loaded the man's wheelchair into his van and gave him a ride home.
This is a truly selfless act that made an impact on a patient and her husband but also on me. My heart was warmed hearing this story, and I am honored to call Scott not only a coworker but also a friend. There are many people who would not have stopped to help that man, but not Scott. Any day of the week, rain or shine, I believe that Scott would do it again without hesitation. That is the kind of man he is. He is kind and he is giving not only in this instance but every day with his patients and their families.
