A patient felt underwhelmed by her care. She had a few bad experiences within the hospital over the course of her stay. All she wanted was education and time to go outside and get some fresh air. Scott witnessed this woman in dismay and realized he had to do something. He went into her room and educated her first. He explained to her how the incentive spirometer worked, what her wound vac was for, what a CPAP/BiPAP was for and how to follow up when she leaves, the consequences of narcotics, and most importantly, how to safely move after getting heart surgery. After she understood that narcotics were not the best option for her, Scott offered her an ice pack to soothe her pain. After that, Scott proceeded to safely load her into a wheelchair and take her outside so that she could get the fresh air she so desperately needed. When the patient returned, she said she felt much better and that the ice pack helped the hurt go away. Scott is not a bedside nurse, he is an educator, yet he took the time and treated this patient like he was responsible for her. He made her day brighter, introduced her to safer forms of pain control, and improved this patient's overall stay with only an hour of his time. Nurse leaders like Scott make a big impact on patients and nurses everywhere. Thank you for what you do, Scott!
