He treated me and our family with deep kindness. He allowed me to be part of the team. He took our family’s well-being into account every day.
I would like to nominate Scott Verhoff for the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. I feel he is very deserving. My husband was admitted to ICU recently. He has spent over 25 days in ICU. He was in a farming accident in October. They discovered he had necrotizing fasciitis. This required multiple surgeries, life support, and continuous dialysis. He ultimately lost both legs by amputation. This all required very skillful care.

Scott was my husband’s nurse for many of these days while he was in the ICU. Scott demonstrated HUMAN DIGNITY by having respect for my husband and caring for him as he would care for his own family. He treated me and our family with deep kindness. He allowed me to be part of the team. He took our family’s well-being into account every day. Scott would stop and see him, even if he wasn’t his patient.

Scott practices INTEGRITY by having strong moral principles. He worked on many of his days off to continue to care for my husband. This gave our family a sense of overall trust. Having Scott as our nurse day after day helped with the continuity of care that he needed. He consistently worked with professionalism even when it wasn’t easy to do.

Scott showed COMPASSION by listening to us and answering ALL of our questions. He identified our vulnerabilities and helped relieve them. He showed empathy by letting me and our family stay in his room and be part of his daily care. His compassionate care definitely impacted the outcome of my husband’s recovery.

Scott used STEWARDSHIP skills by taking time himself to research the Farm Service Agency. He gave us contact numbers to call to check on any programs that help with injured farmers. Scott, being a farmer and a farmer’s son, knows the importance of being able to return to farming. This small gesture will help us tremendously in the years to come.

Scott’s hard work ethic and compassion for his career as a nurse allow him to SERVE Mercy Health as an EXTRAORDINARY NURSE.

Thank you, Scott!
