It is with great pleasure that our family nominates Scott Woodby RN on MICU at UTMB Galveston for The DAISY Award. The DAISY Award identifies 6 areas of care that a nurse should exhibit to demonstrate extraordinary nursing practice. Scott was integral to our father's care after he suffered a cardiac arrest and was admitted to the 8th floor MICU. During our time on this unit, Scott demonstrated each of the 6 areas consistently.
Critical Thinking:
Perhaps the most impressive characteristic of Scott's care was critical thinking. Scott demonstrated objective analysis and evaluation to develop treatment interventions that lead to an increased sense of control for our dad. He was able to construct sensitive questions directed at my father to help him build self-awareness around his medical care in order to make vital decisions in his treatment without passing judgment for our dad's responses. This led to our father ending an internal debate by agreeing to the recommended treatment by his physician team.
Compassion:
In every interaction we had with Scott, he showed great compassion. Some of the examples that I can give are his constant attention to the small requests that my dad had. He brought him fresh cups of coffee at every request, something that we could have done but he chose to serve. His interactions were therapeutic in nature. He listened to everything my dad said and acted on each request. When my father complained about the blood pressure cuff making his arm sweaty he told him that he could take it off and that he would come and place it each time he needed his blood pressure taken. When we were moving from ICU to the floor he noticed that dinner was on its way to the floor and quickly went to retrieve it so that my dad would have a warm meal when he arrived in his new room. After being discharged from the MICU and readmitted to the SICU after his quadruple bypass, Scott made it a point to come to check on him. This was one of the most meaningful moments of our stay. To be remembered by a busy nurse two days after being on his service really made us feel cared for.
Teamwork and advocacy:
Scott worked with the team to identify ways to meet my dad's wishes while maintaining important medical restrictions. Scott could tell that sitting in the room and not being able to walk or stand was causing my father mental unrest. He worked with the staff to identify appropriate ways that he could allow my dad some freedom to walk without putting him at harm.
Patient/Family Focus:
Each time Scott came into the room he listened to the entire family's concerns and answered each of them with incredible aptitude and poise. His responses were comforting and non-judgmental, bringing the entire family to ease during this difficult time.
Exemplifies Excellence:
We believe that the following quote demonstrates the excellence in care that Scott provides to his patients, fellow staff and trainees. Scott said, "You have to remember that when you become a patient, rights and privileges are taken away from you, as a nurse you have to give it back in any way you can."
