Sean Martin, BSN, RN, CCRN, C-ELBW
Our son was born at 25-week gestation, weighing just 794 grams. The NICU became our home, and during the most fragile and terrifying season of our lives, one nurse made an extraordinary and lasting impact on our family: Sean Martin.
Sean was assigned to us during his first week back from maternity leave. At the time, our son was still intubated and incredibly delicate. I will admit that when I first saw a male nurse walk into our room, I felt hesitant and guarded. But that feeling disappeared almost immediately.
From the very beginning, I saw the gentleness in Sean's hands and the intention behind his care. Our son's comfort truly mattered to him. He noticed the smallest details. He didn't just complete tasks; he cared for my son.
What truly set Sean apart was his empathy. He did not walk into the room assuming control simply because he was the nurse. While he confidently handled everything that medically needed to be done, he intentionally made space for my voice and my husband's voice. He asked our opinions. He listened when we shared what comforted him. He respected that we knew our son. In an environment where parents can feel powerless, Sean made us feel like essential members of our son's care team.
While he was intubated, routine care such as weighing him, bathing him, or changing linens often required two nurses. I would sit and watch, feeling completely excluded from my own son's care. Sean changed that. He was the first nurse who included me in every possible step of his care when it was medically appropriate. Instead of calling for a second nurse, he used me as his second set of hands. He trusted his skills, and he trusted me. In a situation where I had absolutely no control, he gave me back a sense of purpose and confidence as a mother.
Our son did not take well to new nurses, but he took to Sean almost instantly. You could see he felt at ease with him. On the very first night we met Sean, he offered to become his primary nurse. At the time, we did not fully understand how much that role would shape our NICU journey.
Throughout our stay on NICU Floor 3, Sean remained his only designated primary nurse. Every shift he worked, he was one of his assignments. We were also incredibly blessed to have a wonderful continuity team of nurses who chose to work with our son when they could. Their care and support meant so much to our family. However, Sean carried the consistent responsibility of being his primary nurse, and that continuity made an immeasurable difference in our experience.
Because of Sean, I was finally able to step away from the hospital for short periods during those early weeks. I could breathe. I could rest. I could trust that my son was safe.
One of the most remarkable things about Sean is that I cannot recall a single dramatic emergency under his care, and that says everything. He never allowed situations to escalate to that point. He did not rely solely on alarms. He watched trends. He recognized subtle changes in his breathing, color, and heart rate before they became critical. If he began trending downward in his oxygen saturation or showing early signs of a potential bradycardia episode, Sean was already in the room. He intervened early. He adjusted positioning. He assessed comfort. He prevented escalation.
For a mother of a 25-week preemie, not being able to recall a crisis under a nurse's care is perhaps the greatest compliment that nurse could ever receive. Sean didn't just respond to emergencies; he prevented them.
Sean walked with our son from being intubated at 25 weeks to transitioning to high flow 2L by 33 weeks. He was present for milestones. He was steady during frightening moments. He helped us sleep at night knowing our son was in capable, compassionate hands.
