Last week, we had a very ill patient on the unit. The bedside nurse had tried to get multiple providers to come visualize the patient. During this time, the patient's IV was no longer functioning. The bedside nurse consulted the IV team and Sean came bedside to insert an IV. He spent a while with the patient and was still unable to gain access. He had overheard the bedside nurses' concerns about the patient, and he stepped in to ask if the critical care doctors were involved, yet. We mentioned that they were not and that they were our next call. He stated that he would walk over to the ICU and mention this patient to them. Within 10 minutes, he had the ICU team at the bedside and the patient was going to be transferred to the ICU. He came to the bedside to place an IV but really played a vital role in getting this patient to the proper level of care that she needed. He was professional, helpful, and a wonderful patient advocate!
