Sebrina Light is the best charge nurse I have ever worked for – and I have worked for a bunch! She is caring and hard-working; she is proactive and an amazing resource nurse.

I am nominating her for the DAISY Award because of the care she gave one of my patients. The patient is a young woman in her early 20s. She was born with mental and physical disabilities. She is immobile, doesn’t communicate, and has a feeding tube and a tracheostomy. Every few months, this sweet patient comes to HVMC for a trach change. When she comes, it is always difficult to get in an IV. It is traumatic for the staff, doctors, patient, and her parents.

One time, Sebrina took the patient’s parents and caregivers aside and explained what a portacath was and how it could potentially alleviate the need for a peripheral IV stick. She advised the parents to research the idea and discuss it with the patient’s PCP. They took the nurse’s advice, chose to go ahead with the portacath, and scheduled the procedure.

When the nurse saw the patient’s name on the OR schedule, she called the case manager and left a message regarding the need for post-op follow-up and education for the patient and her parents. When the patient arrived, the case manager had not replied. The nurse checked the chart, noted the PCP, and contacted the office. She scheduled an appointment for the parents to receive education on the portacath and to set up home health. When the patient’s parents took her home, they were prepared for the next step in their very long journey.

This nurse’s intervention was very helpful to the patient and her parents. This is just one example of the above-and-beyond care that she gives to all of her patients. Every nurse who works under her could give individual examples of how amazing she is.
