Because of her approach, the child became noticeably calmer, allowing us to safely complete the necessary interventions.
It is my honor to nominate Semaj King for the DAISY in Training Award. Semaj is the embodiment of what it means to be a compassionate, patient-centered nurse, even while still in training. Her empathy is genuine, her dedication is unwavering, and the care she provides consistently goes above and beyond expectations. While it is difficult to identify a single defining moment—because Semaj demonstrates excellence on every shift—one experience truly reflects her character. During a busy shift in the pediatric emergency department, we cared for a young child who was extremely anxious and fearful about receiving treatment. The child was crying, resisting care, and the parent was becoming increasingly overwhelmed. Without hesitation, Semaj calmly stepped in, got down to the child’s eye level, and began engaging them in a gentle, age-appropriate conversation. She used distraction techniques, offered reassurance, and involved the parent in a supportive way. Because of her approach, the child became noticeably calmer, allowing us to safely complete the necessary interventions. More importantly, the family expressed sincere gratitude for the kindness and patience she showed during such a stressful moment. Semaj also demonstrates strong clinical skills and critical thinking well beyond her current level of training.
Although she is not yet fully cleared to perform independent nursing assessments, she consistently anticipates the next steps in patient care. She recognizes subtle changes in patient condition, asks thoughtful questions, and actively seeks to deepen her understanding. She is quick and efficient with vital signs, splinting, and technical skills, always ensuring patient comfort and safety remain her priority. What sets Semaj apart most is her advocacy. She is a voice for her patients—especially in pediatrics—ensuring they feel heard, safe, and cared for. Families frequently recognize her compassionate approach and ability to connect, often commenting on how she makes difficult situations more manageable. Semaj is continuously striving to improve, embracing every learning opportunity with humility and determination. Her passion for nursing is evident in every interaction, and her commitment to ethical, kind, and high-quality care reflects the very spirit of the DAISY Award. I am truly grateful to call Semaj both a colleague and a friend. I wholeheartedly encourage LSU to recognize her with this well-deserved honor.
