I know for a fact that a lot of lives were touched by this young man as he cared for them during these times and I am grateful for my opportunity to work alongside him.
It's hard to stick to a specific reason that qualifies Sergio Ramirez for a DAISY award. He is always on the hall teaching new graduates, helping neighbors, and building connections with his patients. On many occasions, I have noticed that if there is a patient on any of our 3 halls that speaks Spanish - regardless of which hall he is on, Sergio will take time out of his shift to come to talk to that patient and ensure they're able to express their needs and get the care that they need. He goes above and beyond not just for these patients that can't communicate their needs - but to their families as well.

Throughout this past year, our unit has seen a lot of death and sadness with our COVID patients and their families. With many of these patients (who will remain unnamed), I have seen Sergio create a special bond. Because of this bond and the nature of who he is, Sergio has picked up extra shifts just to care for these individuals as they turn for the worse. For obvious reasons, our COVID patients aren't allowed family members to be with them, so staff members are often all they have to converse and share details about their life with.

I know for a fact that a lot of lives were touched by this young man as he cared for them during these times and I am grateful for my opportunity to work alongside him. Many employees at our hospital have stepped up this last year and deserve recognition for the lives that they touched, those that they saved, and those that they helped ease their suffering as they passed. However, I think that Sergio deserves special recognition for all that he has done and continues to do.
