The above individuals are the surgery coordinators at HMC. They are a mixture of RNs and CSTs who work behind the scenes to make sure that our surgeons have everything they need to be successful in the OR. They have all played a vital role in the growth of surgery at HMC.

Before the surgeon starts operating at HMC, they sit down with their assigned coordinator and go over everything they will need for all of their cases. The coordinator then takes that information, creates preference cards for the staff to use, and makes sure items that we may not have yet get ordered. This often involves reaching out to different hospitals, doing research on the items requested, and working with our sterile processing/inventory team. When the surgeon starts operating at HMC, they work closely with the surgeon and our team to make sure everything runs smoothly. Surgeons often decide to try new items or switch up what they want to use during surgery. Coordinators make sure this gets communicated to everyone involved.

The coordinator's role does not stop once they leave the building. The surgery on-call team calls them if an issue arises that needs to be addressed in a timely manner or if they simply are having trouble finding a specific item in the core that a surgeon is requesting. They are often saying, "I'm just a phone call away," and they truly mean it.

The OR could not function without the hard work and dedication of our surgery coordinators. They are a valuable resource for our nurses, techs, and surgeons.
