I am a new hire RN, still on orientation. My first day on the floor, my preceptor was off on leave. Shada very excited become my preceptor and to have me as an orientee; not only did she step up on my first day, she has done this every day that we have worked together. She displays exceptional patient and family care. She has the utmost respect and devotion to putting the patients care as her top priority.

While "shadowing" on my first day, we had a patient that was in extreme pain. The patient was crying in pain, asking Shada and me to pray for her because it was her last day on Earth. Shada took the patient's hand and assured her that she would pray for her and help make her feel comfortable. Shada then went and got this patient a Rosary. While we went back into the patients room, Shada placed the rosary in her hand, and said I am giving you a rosary so you can pray as well. This gesture calmed the patient and immediately the patient closed her eyes and a sense of calm came over the patient.

This type of gesture is one that makes Shada not only my mentor, but someone that I strive to become as a nurse. I feel that she should be honored with the DAISY Award. This was just one story that Shada displayed the values of CREDO while having me as an orientee.
