My nurse, Shana, saw me when I came to the ER for a displaced jaw. Due to her compassionate questions and manner of treating me, I was able to disclose the mental state I was in. She had the wonderful ability to express care and listening skills that gave me a way to open up and talk about the depression I was in and was trying to keep buried. In that VA ER visit, I got more help than I came for. I came for a jaw issue that was addressed but due to her skilled care, I got help for the deeper, darker reality I was living in. This all happened in August of 2023. I was able to get further help from the VA in Marion Indiana. After two years, I stopped at the ER to say thank you to Shana. To my surprise she was working and said she remembered me. She and her fellow nurses rejoiced in my progress.  I will always be grateful for her keen attention to issues I was unwilling to address.
