Our 7 week old son was admitted with RSV. He declined quickly, going from nasal cannula, to ventilator, to oscillator in less than 36 hours. My husband and I had to take turns at the hospital because we have 3 other children at home. He was exhausted and I didn't know what was happening so I called the PICU and spoke to my baby's nurse for the day - Shana.
She explained everything that was happening in a way that calmed my panicked heart. He was critical and he needed time. When I finally arrived at the hospital, Shana was there to answer my questions. She even got me a step stool so I could kiss my sweet boy! That meant the world to me.
Shana requested my baby as a patient whenever she was working and the consistency of having the same nurse really helped us feel comfortable in being there and asking questions. Shana was supportive when a situation occurred during an x-ray. She even made sure that the appropriate people followed up. She checked on our son even when she wasn't working. And when, after 2 weeks, we finally got moved to the 3rd floor, she made a point to check in with us and give us her number in case we needed anything.
It is this type of care and compassion that helped us get through the worst days. We love and appreciate Nurse Shana for going above and beyond for our baby and for us!
