From the beginning of her shift, Shanay recognized that something wasn’t right. A post-operative patient was in significant discomfort, and had not shown signs of bowel activity for days. Shanay trusted her clinical instincts, and advocated relentlessly on the patient's behalf. She remained at the bedside, carefully monitoring the patient. When the pain escalated, she voiced her concerns to the medical team, persistently, and respectfully, ensuring they re-evaluated the plan of care. Thanks to her advocacy, the patient received the appropriate interventions in time to prevent further complications.

Beyond here clinical vigilance, what stood out most was her compassion. She took the time to explain what was happening to the patient and family so that they could understand. She provided comfort during moments of fear and uncertainty. Her actions exemplify what it means to be a nurse! Skilled, deeply compassionate, and patient-centered.
