Shane is one of the few nurses who has been able to gain his trust. It has helped my brother finish another round of treatment instead of giving up.
My mom was Shane's patient. We were both scared and nervous. Shane was organized, efficient, and sensitive, putting my mom at ease. Shane would squat or kneel next to Mom’s bed when he talked to her. Then go to the computer, type, then return and kneel again to talk to her. Shane, kneeling, put him face level with her. Mom relaxed and answered and asked questions. Shane gave her his undivided attention. It was good seeing this. He put me at ease, too. I felt better about leaving my mom. I don't remember ever seeing anyone kneel to talk with a patient. Everyone stands hovering above the patient, talking into the computer, barely even looking at the patient. Shane did this every time he talked to her. When I walked to the elevator, I saw him kneeling and talking to another patient. This is Shane's normal treatment of patients. Seeing him care for her like this enabled me to trust him and go home. Shane is a really good nurse with amazing people skills.

I received excellent care from several dedicated nurses and healthcare professionals. However, one of the registered nurses, Shane, yielded a level of care that made a huge impact on my successful recuperation. The considerable amount of discomfort began to greatly reduce my overall sense of well-being, to the point of becoming despondent and emotionally distraught. Shane quickly recognized the symptoms of my unbalanced state and reacted in a calm but firm manner by dropping down to one knee and meeting my gaze at eye level. He then reassured me that my progress was right on schedule.

During those rather difficult early days of recovery, Shane was my RN who took on the responsibility of optimizing my healing process. This included being thorough and careful in his nursing duties while providing thoughtful answers to each of my questions and still finding occasions to share his timely sense of humor. He would talk with me in a kind, compassionate, and supportive tone while also being a good listener, all of which made me believe that I was the only patient who mattered.

Shane's distinctive and calming voice, however, was easily recognizable from across the hallway, and I soon discovered that he had more than enough professionalism, compassion, and generous disposition to spread evenly across his patient load. Coming to the realization and reality that Shane was clearly making a difference in each of his patients' progress, I tacitly conveyed my concern over monopolizing his time, yet he never came up short in any way as a caregiver! For these reasons, Shane will always remain the most salient and pleasant recollection of my otherwise successful spinal neurosurgery experience.
