Shane was the night nurse on Tuesday and Wednesday on the third floor-Trauma/Neuro and he assisted my husband. I spent both nights in the room. The first night was uneventful but the next night was a challenge! My husband was having alcohol withdrawal and began having hallucinations! He had exhibited short-term memory loss starting Monday from the Wernicke's encephalopathy. The bed alarm was set and it was constantly going off with my husband getting up every 5-10 minutes. Even with Ativan being administered by Shane every two hours, it didn't slow my husband down as he jumped up to look for bottles of whiskey, searching for pills, and the final episode of many- my husband pulled out his IV and the bed, floor, and my husband were covered in blood. Shane calmly told my husband to hold the towel on the wound and then cleaned up my husband and the whole room. Through the whole night, Shane was calm, patient, caring and explained to me what was happening. He spoke with the Lead Nurse about the need for a sitter since I was exhausted from the sleepless night and craziness. We both thank Shane for compassionate and skillful medical care.
