Shanekia Hunt, RN

I recently had the privilege of being cared for by Shanekia Hunt at UNC Health Rex on 6 West for my knee replacement. During my visit, I learned about your hospital's value “Carolina Cares,” and it struck me how perfectly Shanekia embodies that spirit. It is truly a privilege to be cared for at Rex, and Shanekia made me feel that privilege in action.

I had the unique experience of being with Shankia on two consecutive shifts-her very last day of orientation and her very first day as an independent nurse. Her excitement was contagious, and that enthusiasm poured into the care she provided me. It is rare to see the joy and eagerness of a new nurse in such a genuine way, and it made my experience unforgettable. I have undergone multiple surgeries at UNC Rex, but this was by far my best experience.

Shanika embraced the message displayed in the OR holding room that “Care Starts with Caring”. She lived that value with warmth, authenticity, and true compassion. She genuinely wanted to do a good job, not just for the sake of performing her role, but because she sincerely cared about me as her patient. In a time when it can be difficult to find such genuine dedication in the workforce, Shanika's presence was refreshing and inspiring. She made me feel not only safe but valued.

Shanika exemplifies the heart of nursing, and I cannot think of a better way to recognize her than through this DAISY Award.
