Shannan is an extraordinary nurse, but her care for this particular patient showed that she went above and beyond anything I've ever seen anyone do for a patient.
We had a patient on the floor who was a female in her 30's, admitted for a CVA after a failed clipping of an aneurysm. She had been in the ICU for months and had many complications from this procedure. She had a very supportive husband, father and two young girls. The family had a lot of trust issues due to her complications and we all worked hard to gain their trust and give the patient the best possible care. Shanann and another nurse especially worked long and hard with this patient and her family to give her the best possible quality of life.
For Valentine's Day, they bought the patient a dress, make up and shoes; a present for her to give to her husband and decorated her room. Then they helped her get dressed and got dinner for them from Red Lobster so the patient and her husband could have some "alone" time, the first time since the patient had been hospitalized months before. The patient was still here months later on her birthday, so Shanann organized a birthday party for her and her family complete with food, cake, decorations and presents. The whole floor attended and it so made the patient's day. During the patient's whole stay (close to a year), Shanann not only took excellent nursing care for the patient, but truly went above and beyond to provide emotional support for the patient and her family. She is absolutely deserving of a DAISY award.

Shanann Morrissey is an exceptional nurse that is a great role model for others. She always thinks of others first. There are so many examples but I will share my own personal experience for being blessed with knowing her. In October 2012, I was diagnosed with Leukemia. There are many different forms and unfortunately I had the one with a 10 percent survival rate. I needed a bone marrow transplant. My world was turned upside down. I call her my Angel because she was always there for me. She did fundraising and helped organize a benefit. She stayed with me in Buffalo at Roswell Cancer Institute when my husband could not. I had many setbacks but Shanann was always there. On one visit, I was short of breath and after further testing, I had bilateral pulmonary embolism. She stayed with me for two days, sleeping in a chair. She donated many days to me so I could continue to receive a paycheck and encouraged others to also. She still drives me to Roswell in Buffalo once a month on her day off, every Monday. Even when she works 12 hours on the weekend, she shows up at my house at 6:30am Monday morning to make the two and a half hour trip to and back from Buffalo. You would never know if anything was going on in her personal life because she will adjust it to meet the needs of those around her. This is the kind of RN and person she is. She respects everyone and always thinks of the patients first.
