Despite the patient's difficult demeanor and refusal to listen to anyone else, Shannon had a way with him. And he got better. The impact of Shannon's care extended far beyond the hospital walls.
It all began when Shannon first met a family in need. The patient was facing multiple health challenges, including withdrawal from alcohol, a severe heart valve condition, and fluid overload. Shannon knew the situation was critical, and she wasted no time in taking action. Throughout the night, Shannon tirelessly advocated for the patient, recognizing the urgency of his condition and pushing for necessary interventions. Her swift actions ultimately saved his life as he was emergently intubated and transferred to the ICU. But Shannon's impact didn't end there. As the patient returned to the CVU for further care, Shannon continued to provide unwavering support. Despite the patient's initial reluctance and difficulty, Shannon's compassionate and joking approach fostered a special connection between them. He even joked with her, “We are leaving together, and I was to quit, and he'd pay me privately.”

Fast forward two weeks and the patient returned for a TAVR procedure, only to face unexpected complications requiring open-heart surgery. Once again, Shannon was there, providing comfort and support during his recovery in the ICU and back on the CVU. Despite the patient's difficult demeanor and refusal to listen to anyone else, Shannon had a way with him. And he got better. The impact of Shannon's care extended far beyond the hospital walls. A heartfelt message from the patient's son to Shannon's manager serves as a testament to the profound connection they shared.

In Shannon's own words, "There's a few in your career you connect with... But in my 8 years, he's one of the special ones. I'll remember him, his name, and his family forever. I have his daughter's phone number. This is why I do what I do. I made a difference for them, for him, and being there for them on their very worst day and being able to see them through to the other side is what it's all about."
