I say this not for you to have pity on me because I have to work late BUT BECAUSE YOU MATTER. YOU MATTER.
I worked with Shannon in the ED on a recent, busy Saturday. Shannon is a SAFE nurse in the ED. I triaged a 20-year-old female who was in need of Shannon’s expertise as the SAFE nurse. This patient was reluctant to tell her story in triage to me but later opened up to Shannon. The patient already had a recent traumatizing past, and the events of the past 24 hours were just unbearable. The girl felt worthless, unimportant, and unworthy of Shannon’s help. She had “shut down” and just wanted to leave the ED. It was near the end of my shift, and this patient just tugged at my heart. A week later, I was working with Shannon again and followed up with her about our patient. What Shannon proceeded to tell me brings tears to my eyes as I type this. It was 1900, and Shannon was supposed to be done with her 12-hour shift. Shannon went to the patient’s bedside and said, “I just made several phone calls to make arrangements for someone to watch my 2 young children and for someone to let my dog out as I am not done with my time with you. I say this not for you to have pity on me because I have to work late BUT BECAUSE YOU MATTER. YOU MATTER." Those words struck a chord with me. Life as a nurse in the ED has been rough lately, especially with Covid, staffing issues, and healthcare in general. But Shannon exemplifies who a DAISY nurse is. Her compassion and expertise is a shining star in our dept, and I’m honored to work by her side.
