It’s 2:36 am and normally I’d be in bed, but I just got home from an emergency room visit and simply can’t close my eyes until someone knows what I experienced.
I’ve been around a time or two having chronic anemia and having to make doctors and hospitals a near constant in my life to remain healthy. I’d not been feeling great for a few weeks, but came up with thousands of excuses as to why I wasn’t feeling well, which all came to a head tonight when a visit to an outside clinic (not St Joe) made me aware of my anemia. Having shortness of breath and heart palpitations I was told to head to the hospital.
I’m not new to any of this and I’ve had my share of great doctors and nurses as well as those who were perhaps having a bad day, but tonight I had the most amazing nurse EVER. EVER!!! I can’t sleep until someone knows how absolutely precious she is and how she made a blah blah sucky moment for me into an actual okay evening.
She was spectacular, respectful that I’ve done this before and welcoming of my suggestions such as “they seem to have better luck with my other arm as far as iv’s, blood draws” without sounding as if I offended her. She explained what was happening and kept me up to date on the status of my blood work and so forth.
Even though the ER was busy she was quick to respond to my needs, and apologetic of any extra waiting she felt like I put up with. (I didn’t feel like I had to wait extra at all, it was obvious they were busy, and I felt like Shannon was on the ball). She seemed truly interested in my situation and listened, she didn’t seem preoccupied like I’ve experienced in the past.
I’m hoping to stay away from your ER department for a good long while now, (because who wants to spend an evening at ER REALLY?) but the next time I have to be there I’m going to ask for Shannon.
I think we are so quick to complain when things go wrong. But tonight things went completely right, and an awesome nurse needs a pat on the back for being amazing!
