Shannon’s leadership goes beyond teaching skills—she inspires a deeper passion for midwifery by balancing essential licensure content with the principles of the midwifery model of care, encouraging her students to explore the “whys” behind real-world obstetric practices.
This is a well-deserved honor for Shannon’s extraordinary contributions to her students, colleagues, and patients. Two of her students nominated her for this DAISY Award.
Shannon is described by her students and colleagues as an exceptional role model, mentor, and nurse-midwife. As the Specialty Director of the Nurse Mid-Wife Program, she ensures every student feels seen, heard, and respected. One student described Shannon as “the most down-to-earth and passionate nurse-midwife” she has ever met, radiating love and dedication for the specialty in all she does. Shannon’s dedication to cultural awareness and equity is a cornerstone of her work. She challenges students to consider the whole patient: their environment, transportation barriers, financial limitations, and more. Her experience working with an underserved, predominantly Spanish-speaking population as a clinical nurse-midwife serves as a living example of how to provide compassionate, inclusive care.
Shannon’s commitment to improving access to midwifery care extends beyond the classroom. Together with Denise Smith, she co-created the rural midwifery track at CU, expanding access to midwifery care in underserved rural areas. This innovative program is just one of many ways Shannon bridges gaps in healthcare and inspires her students to do the same.
Her mentorship is unparalleled. Whether responding to a student’s email at a moment’s notice, guiding them through complex patient care scenarios, or offering practical advice for managing the challenges of midwifery, Shannon makes herself available and approachable. In her nomination, her student highlighted how Shannon fosters a learning environment that builds confidence and never makes a student feel inadequate. Her ability to empower students while ensuring they feel calm and competent is nothing short of extraordinary.
The CU College of Nursing Alumni Association honors Shannon Pirrie for her brilliance, compassion, and leadership. Thank you, Shannon, for your dedication to shaping not only exceptional providers but also a more equitable and compassionate future in healthcare.
