She helps to render care; she is an advocate for all, and she will support her team emotionally.  Shannon has done amazing things for her patients.  She buys items from her own pocket to help them through their healing process.
Shannon Queen MSR RN CMSRN CNML.  Her name and credentials tell part of her story right there.  Shannon is an outstanding nurse and leader.  She has been the leader for 3ONL for a couple of years now and has poured her heart and soul in her unit, her associates, and her patients.  Shannon has done great things during her leadership on 3ONL.  I hear all the time from other associates of her great work and how the unit is cohesive.

Shannon shares her stories on her unit, good or bad to help others in their journey.  For instance, if Shannon knows of an issue with dietary or electronic equipment, she will email other nurse managers to keep them in the loop or to help them waste time investigating.  This is small but huge because the one thing we can’t get back is time.  Shannon will reach out to other managers as well to close the loop on any concerns with patient safety or documentation.  She truly is outcome driven especially when it comes to patient safety.

Shannon always has a professional demeanor. She gives you 100% of her time and attention when she speaks to you. She makes you feel important. She is kind in her words, and no matter the conversation, good or bad, she makes you feel supported.  Shannon will send emails and always end it with something positive, whether it is a have a good day or a quote that resonates with perseverance.

Shannon’s unit is one that can be a challenge often. She receives patients who can be violent and aggressive.  She is the co-chair of the Workplace Violence Committee. She receives patients who can almost become residents because they need guardianship, and this means they stay in her unit for months.  Shannon supports her team however she can.  She helps to render care; she is an advocate for all, and she will support them emotionally.  Shannon has done amazing things for her patients.  She buys items from her own pocket to help them through their healing process.  Shannon has provided arts and crafts, puzzles, and more to a patient who was mentally challenged.  Shannon has provided beauty products and hair products for a transgender patient. She has cut patients' hair when needed. She has transported a patient's cat to a foster home so the patient knew he was safe. She wanted that patient to know she supported how they wanted to be identified. Shannon builds a personal connection by getting to know her patients and her associates. Shannon continuously goes above and beyond every day for her staff and her patients. She has truly made a difference on Oniel 3!!

Shannon is a DAISY Nurse Leader because of her exceptional leadership, unwavering dedication to her unit and associates, and commitment to education.  She models excellence in everything she does.

Shannon Queen is the co-chair of the MGSH workplace violence committee and has helped drive needed change at the hospital for the WPV program. Shannon has decades of experience in handling violent patients and visitors and is always quick to share her abundance of knowledge in this area to staff not just in her department but in every department at MGSH. She is pivotal in driving change and addressing issues. Although when I approached her to be the co-chair for the MGSH committee she was already slammed with work leading her department as well as participation in other committees she managed to carve out time to help lead this committee. Leading this committee is no small task and requires several hours outside of meetings to round, speak with staff, educate, and policy building, so it was no small lift and the time needed was large. She has been such a huge supporter of this committee and has provided subject matter expertise in this area, not only to keep staff safe but also to provide the empathetic insight needed to make WPV policies effective and thoughtful for all parties involved. She is not shy by any means, and thankfully will voice her opinion and speak up when she sees or hears something going on. She has been involved with the de-escalation of patients on several floors and has assisted multiple leaders in applying safe workplace violence practices. In this past year, all departments on campus has benefited from the work Shannon has done and the effort she has put into this committee and its practices and policy development. When leaders email about an issue, she is quick to respond not just in email but in person if needed. Her passion and the work she does running this committee drives positive change throughout the campus and will help MGSH reach its goal of being the safest place to work within MedStar!
