Shanta Powell was nominated by a family member's friend of one of the patients that she cared for while they were at Phoebe Sumter. In the nomination, the family member wrote the following:

Four weeks ago, I was at Phoebe Sumter to support a friend whose mother was hospitalized and dying of cancer. It was 4:00 am and I and another one of my friends were sitting in the room while my friend held her mother's hand. It was in this moment we met a friend. Shanta Powell had been sincerely warm and kind to my friend's mother and to all of us ever since she came onto her 12 hour shift at 7 pm. She introduced herself and asked if we needed anything. She looks at us in our eyes, listens attentively and answers all of our questions. She is not rushed, you just know deep down inside that she genuinely cares.

We share our story with her and she is sympathetic and very understanding. Days and nights come and go, and this nurse continues to be amiable and devoted, and we are in awe. She clearly represents clinical expertise and extraordinary compassionate care. Shanta Powell, RN, is a nurse that goes above and beyond. She showed wonderful conduct and efficiency at her job and is a benefit to Phoebe Sumter. Please give the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses to Shanta Powell, as she is most praiseworthy and admirable. She touched many lives in her 12 hour shift and she will never be forgotten. Nurses are the heart of Healthcare and we fully believe that Shanta is the heart of the Medical/Surgical floor at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center.
