My mom has been admitted many times to IU Health Arnett. Tonight she was brought by ambulance. She had a temp of 102.9 and was very miserable. X-rays showed pneumonia again.
The ED was overflowing; and yet, there was a room full of caregivers in the room for her because she was so ill. They got blood, urine, and eventually x-rays.
Shari was mom's nurse as she has been before. Tonight with all the patients and chaos, Shari was calm, caring, kind, and willing to listen to me as mom's caregiver and concerned daughter. She was methodical without being impersonal. She was everything I'd want a nurse to be. She's well educated and intelligent. She combines that with her interpersonal skills to be the whole package as a nurse.
On an incredibly hectic night, with chaos around her, Shari was our port in the storm. Her kindness went hand in hand with her professionalism. Shari is an asset to the ED and to IU Health Arnett. Thank you!

The account written by the patient are actions that Shari carries out every shift she works. These actions are only a glimpse into the amazing advocacy and work Shari does on a daily basis. It is not uncommon for Shari to provide her own philanthropy while working in the Emergency Department. The expression "shirt off their own back" was created when Shari McIlvain became a nurse. Shari embodies the perfect mix of selflessness with a professional demeanor. She reaches her patients on a personal level and this story is only one instance of the thousands of lives she has touched over her nursing career. This impact is not only recognized by patients but also felt by her fellow staff. Shari has taught us invaluable lessons such as the purse donation she provides to homeless women. She is a friend, mentor, and role-model for her fellow staff members and patients. Every nurse, paramedic, and tech aspires to have Shari's natural ability to bring serenity and joy to situations by her simple presence. There are not enough words to express our gratitude for all that Shari has done for both our patients and staff members.
