Sharlyn's care began before we had even arrived on the unit. Knowing that my wife was having a difficult delivery journey, she came down to L&D to meet us and let us know she would be waiting for us because my wife was suffering with very high anxiety. It was a turning point for her to feel calm enough to make one of the most stressful decisions of her life: proceed with the C-section, something that was a huge scare for her. Sharlyn's visit and assurances allowed my wife, after 3 days of struggle, to move forward. Once we arrived on the floor, Sharlyn met us and took extraordinary care to help her through the first hours of recovery from her first surgery ever while still allowing her to enjoy the first day with our little girl- something I wasn't sure would be possible (all things considered). Sharlyn allowed us to be brought back to the moment, back to the best moment of our lives. All while teaching us the precious lessons of bonding with our little girl. Going to great lengths to be patient with two very stressed, new parents who hadn't slept in three days, which required the same questions to be answered multiple times! Feeling helpless with a newborn was a very real possibility after all that led up to our arrival on the floor. In fact, even with Sharlyn's exceptional care, there were moments it could have taken over, but thanks to Sharlyn's amazing patience and ability to make the required info digestible to our addled brains, we both were able to not only stay calm but love our first night with our beautiful new baby.
Making possible the impossible task of bringing unbridled joy out of a feeling of possible inadequacy during a time of exhaustion is one of the greatest gifts we will ever receive and why we both highly nominate nurse Sharlyn Saca for the DAISY Award for extraordinary care.
