After her shift, Sharnaye went to the grocery store and came back with little containers of ice cream for him. The spouse could not stop talking about how meaningful and impactful this was for them, and how loved he felt.
One of our beloved patients unfortunately died, and some of us attended his funeral. While I was greeting the family, they expressed their gratitude for the extraordinary care they received from all the staff, but stated that one of the nurses stood out for going above and beyond. While cancer had left the patient with little to no appetite, he loved chocolate ice cream. After her shift, Sharnaye went to the grocery store and came back with little containers of ice cream for him. The spouse could not stop talking about how meaningful and impactful this was for them, and how loved he felt. As a leader, it was a wonderful reminder of the power and value of the little things, and how, at the end of the day, what mattered was the ice cream and not the perfect documentation, or the fact that we ultimately could not save his life. Luckily, Sharnaye was there to hear it, and the family introduced her as "the one who brought E the ice cream" to all their friends and loved ones. May this encourage and empower her to continue to nurse with kindness and compassion. For this and her many other acts of kindness and selflessness towards her patients and our team, Sharnaye deserves a DAISY Award.
