Sharniqua Payne, Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse

I'd like to recognize Sharniqua because she represents the kind of nurse that patients never forget. Healthcare is filled with people who perform their duties well, but every so often you encounter someone whose care goes beyond tasks, schedules, and job descriptions. Sharniqua is one of those rare people.

During a previous hospital stay, the toilet in my room became clogged when I urgently needed to use it. Maintenance was unavailable, and it would have been easy for anyone to simply apologize and tell me to wait. Instead, Sharniqua took ownership of a problem that was not hers to solve. She tracked down a plunger, returned to my room, and spent considerable time working to fix it herself. When she was finished, she cleaned the area thoroughly and restored the room with dignity and care.

Some may see that as a small act. I do not. What I saw was a nurse who refused to let a patient sit in discomfort when there was something she could do about it. I saw someone who understood that caring for people is not always found in the "big" moments. Sometimes it's found in the inconvenient moments, the unseen moments, and the moments when no one is keeping score.

Sharniqua's compassion can't be measured by a checklist. Her professionalism is matched by her humility, and her willingness to serve extends far beyond the boundaries of her job title. She consistently makes her patients feel valued, respected, and cared for as human beings.

Long after patients forget meds, procedures, and room numbers, they will remember how someone made them feel. I will remember Sharniqua because she reminded me that genuine care still exists. She does not simply do nursing work. She embodies the heart of nursing itself.

For these reasons, I wholeheartedly and enthusiastically recommend Sharniqua for this award.
