When recognizing that the visitor’s blood pressure was extremely abnormal combined with his complaints, she insisted the visitor be evaluated and assisted him down to the Emergency Room.
Sharon is an outstanding example of nursing at its best. Not only is she one to quickly help out her coworkers in times of need, but she also exemplifies that all patients are her patients, no matter what the assignment is for that shift. She is always there and has cared for patients and their families through all scenarios, from advocating for their best welfare, caring for the sick or dying patient, consoling patient’s families, or lending an ear to listen. She is well known for flying under the radar and never seeking attention for her contributions, but it does not go unnoticed how exceptional of a nurse she truly is.

A recent event that proves just how remarkable she is was when she was caring for her patient on the medical unit, and the patient’s son was in house visiting but not feeling well. He had voiced that he was having Chest Pain but had refused to go to the ER for evaluation when it was recommended. Some short time passed when he voiced the concern again regarding his Chest Pain and was concerned about his blood pressure. Checking a visitor’s blood pressure is not standard practice at the facility if they are not a patient, but instead, they are advised to be seen in the ER if they have concerns. This nurse grew concerned over his consistent complaints and acted off of her instinct and checked his blood pressure anyway. When recognizing that the visitor’s blood pressure was extremely abnormal combined with his complaints, she insisted the visitor be evaluated and assisted him down to the Emergency Room. Immediately, when placed on the cardiac monitor, it was recognized that the patient was actively having a STEMI. This nurse’s recognition, persistent advocation, and quick response for this patient are key steps that saved his life.
