When entering the room, Shasta makes the patient feel that they are the most important thing to her at that moment and that she has their best interest at heart in the care she gives. She comes in at "non-treatment" times to check on the patient so they realize she genuinely cares about them and is not just task orientated. She never makes the patient feel rushed even when she has many other patients and responsibilities. She is respectful, patient, a good listener, and compassionate, explaining the things she is doing for the patient and answering questions, especially if they disagree with a treatment.
Shasta goes out of her way to do special things like making coffee for the patient from the Keurig, knowing that is what the particular patient (or loved one) was used to at home. She always has a smile for the patient, even when working day 6 in a row (12-hour days) where it would be easy to focus on herself. She is also always looking out for the family and willing to get anything they need to make their prolonged visit more comfortable. She even shared a special treat with the family, even though someone has specifically given it to her for her enjoyment. Shasta epitomizes the core values all nurses need to bring back into the profession!
