I would like to formally recognize Shawn for the exceptional care, advocacy, and compassion he provided to my father and our family during an incredibly difficult time. My 53-year-old father was admitted to the ICU following an emergency bowel resection and required intubation. His bowel obstruction was caused by a side effect of Clozaril, a medication he takes for paranoid schizophrenia. Due to the obstruction and surgery, the medication was discontinued, which unfortunately led to a significant decline in my father’s mental health. Throughout this challenging experience, Shawn went above and beyond in his care. He ensured my father was placed in a more comfortable bed, took the time to sit outside his room to monitor him closely, and consistently explained what was happening, what he was doing, and why. Shawn was a strong advocate for my father when physicians continued to push for extubation, and he listened carefully to and respected my family’s concerns regarding my father’s deteriorating mental health.

What stood out most was Shawn’s compassion, not only toward my father, but toward our entire family. He treated my father with dignity, prioritized both his medical care and comfort, and provided reassurance during an overwhelming and frightening time. His kindness, attentiveness, and advocacy made a profound difference in our experience. My family and I will always be grateful for the exceptional care Shawn provided. He exemplifies the very best of nursing, and he is truly deserving of this recognition
