Shawana Gibson exemplifies caring and compassion, but on a recent occasion her skill at this between a patient and family were extraordinary. A patient recently came to the ED for treatment after denying a very serious health issue for some time. The condition was very advanced and the outcome was a diagnosis that would be very disturbing and life changing for this family. Our area is not the ideal place to have this kind of life altering discussion.

Shawana became the patient advocate as she prepared the patient for the devastating news to be delivered by the physician. She also worked closely with the family to understand all the aspects of the patients condition and help them better understand the emotional and psychological challenges she was facing. During a very scary, life changing moment, Shawana was there for this patient in the middle of a busy department, showing remarkable concern and caring for the comfort and well being of this patient and her family.

I truly believe Shawana was the "difference" for the patient on that visit.
