Shawn consistently takes the opportunity to look for ways to improve the ED. He is very organized, which shows commitment to the department and facility. These are all wonderful qualities and very valuable to the team. But I want to talk about the quality of compassion he demonstrates. One morning I saw Shawn at Walmart purchasing a pair of shoes. I asked him, "Are those for you or your son?" He replied, "Neither". At that moment I knew that he was purchasing the shoes for a patient. After a pause, he told me that there was a patient in the ED with shoes held together by fishing wire.
Not only did Shawn provide nursing care to his patient, he looked beyond what was needed clinically to help this patient with basic needs. Shawn went above and beyond his expected duties and displayed true compassion.
