While reading the criteria for the DAISY Award, I immediately thought of a nurse that is very deserving of this award because of the energy he puts into his job every day. Shawn Fitzgerald is a multifaceted RN having the ability and skills to perform any role in the Surgery department. He is very capable in the role of Surgery Charge nurse because of his abilities. He maintains a good working relationship with the Surgeons and the staff and demonstrates professionalism and respect when communicating with our Surgeons. For the department, he is always available by phone to answer our questions and concerns and is routinely on call as a Circulating Nurse, Scrub Tech or on administrative call, which displays his versatility. Shawn is also in charge of the SPD department ensuring that our instruments are readily processed, repaired and available. Shawn has focused on professional development during his career starting as an LVN, becoming a surgery scrub tech trained in all specialties, with a special emphasis on Cardiovascular/Open Heart surgeries. He later obtained his RN Licensure. Shawn has also obtained his Certified Registered Central Service Technician and Certified Nurse Operating Room Certifications. Shawn is readily available to answer questions and troubleshoot. He communicates frequently with SDS, the nursing floors; ICU and ER to ensure patients are ready for surgery. The questions I hear the most on a daily basis is “where is Shawn?” or “have you seen Shawn?” This is because of how vital he is to the operations of the department! When Shawn is delivering patient care, he shows empathy and a positive attitude. He demonstrates a caring attitude when dealing with patients. When meeting patients, he always identifies himself and displays a caring attitude, develops a rapport that seems to be comforting to the patients. He also displays a professional attitude with patients and is empathetic with the patients concerns, questions and needs. I can see that Shawn’s work ethic displays the mission, vision and values of Nacogdoches Medical Center Hospital. To serve, heal and educate with concern for the whole patient, understanding of the economic environment and relentless commitment to quality!
