I conducted patient care rounds in the DEM. One of the questions that I ask every patient is "Was there someone who stood out to you as going above and beyond in caring for you?" On this day a patient stated that nurse Shawn had definitely gone above and beyond. The patient described the event the night prior stating:
"I was struggling to use the phone to call my family, Shawn, who was not even my nurse, walked by on her way to break and saw that I was having trouble. Without hesitation she put her personal belongings down and came to help me. When the phone wasn't working, she got me another one. She did not leave until I had what I needed and was successful in my call to family."
The patient went on to say that as a terminal cancer patient he has been in and out of the hospital numerous times and no one has ever stopped to help him like that. He was extremely appreciative and said "I will never forget her kindness".
