Shawna came to my unit, 2NT, to help me with a difficult situation. The patient and her mother were very upset that she was being discharged. The patient was withdrawing from opioids and had an infection. The treatment for her infection had been completed. The patient was anxious because she wished to enter treatment for her opioid dependence. She had attempted to use the county resources for treatment in the past but was not successful. Shawna pulled on her past experiences to have a frank discussion about drug abuse and resources in our county. You could clearly see that she was very passionate about the patient's experience and struggles. She made a concrete plan with the patient and followed up shortly after she left the room. I appreciate Shawna's expertise, competence, and support!
