Her bubbly personality, work ethic, and attention to detail have lifted the spirits of residents and staff alike.
It is with great pride and admiration that we celebrate Shawna Newton as the Honoree of The DAISY Award. Shawna exemplifies everything this award stands for: compassion, excellence, advocacy, and an unwavering commitment to her patients, peers, and profession. Nominated by multiple peers, coworkers, and family members, Shawna’s impact on those around her is both profound and inspiring.
Shawna’s dedication to the Student Nurses Association (SNA) has left a lasting legacy. One peer shared, “From the first meeting I attended, I admired Shawna for her steadfast devotion to SNA and for creating an environment where students want to get involved and thrive. As Co-President, she has been kind, helpful, and encouraging as I prepare to step into the role of President. Her mentorship has been invaluable.” Shawna’s ability to inspire and support others demonstrates her natural leadership and selflessness.
Shawna’s compassion and clinical expertise have touched the lives of patients and their families in extraordinary ways. A family member shared how Shawna’s care during their thyroidectomy recovery stood out: “She did everything a good nurse would have done—applying medication, managing my pain, and ensuring my comfort. But what truly set her apart was her ability to remain calm during a fainting episode. She ensured I was safe, contacted the doctor, and followed every protocol with professionalism and care.”
Her coworkers echo this sentiment, highlighting her consistent advocacy for patients. One colleague recounted, “Shawna took immediate action to address the discomfort of a hospice patient, ensuring they received morphine and lorazepam to ease their pain. She went above and beyond, even calling a hospice nurse to come assess the situation. Her actions brought comfort to both the patient and their family during a very difficult time.”
Shawna’s coworkers describe her as the ultimate team player. A CNA shared, “When Shawna is working, you know you have the support you need for a successful shift. She is constantly asking if we need help and often has already repositioned or assisted a resident before I can get there. She does it all with a smile because she genuinely loves providing the best possible care to her patients.”
Her ability to remain calm and composed under pressure was also evident during an active code. One coworker reflected, “Shawna was the first nurse to arrive from another unit, and she jumped right in to perform CPR. Afterward, she comforted the staff involved, ensuring everyone felt supported during such a high-stress situation. She is a rock for her team.”
Shawna’s positive energy and passion for nursing have transformed the atmosphere wherever she works. One coworker noted, “Ever since Shawna started working the night shift, the building has felt different in the best way. Her bubbly personality, work ethic, and attention to detail have lifted the spirits of residents and staff alike. Her presence is truly refreshing.”
Shawna’s peers in nursing school view her as a role model. One student shared, “Shawna has been an amazing mentor throughout my first year of nursing school. She’s always willing to answer questions, help me study, and explain concepts in a way I can understand. Seeing her name on the schedule instantly makes me smile because I know I’ll have her support during the shift.”
Shawna’s unwavering commitment to her patients, her peers, and the nursing profession is extraordinary. Whether she’s advocating for a patient in need, supporting her coworkers, or mentoring future nurses, Shawna goes above and beyond in every aspect of her work. Her compassion, leadership, and dedication make her a truly deserving Honoree of The DAISY Award, and it is an honor to recognize her remarkable contributions to nursing.
