Shawna is an exceptional nurse displaying a high level of clinical knowledge, amazing bedside manners and confident leadership abilities. My Mother came to the unit in respiratory distress due to the pneumonia. Shawna displayed confidence and efficiency in her medical skills. Shawna was sensitive to her emotional needs, as well as her physical needs.
Shawna had an authentic and sweet demeanor that was not put on, or overdone. She was sensitive to what tone and volume of voice was needed at the moment. Shawna went above and beyond in caring for my mom when she put shamrocks up in mom's room during the night shift. When my mom awoke on St. Patrick's Day she saw over twenty shamrocks on the wall opposite her bed. This showed that Shawna listened to my mom and found out that she was very proud of her Irish heritage. This made her and all of us family members feel cared about.
Shawna was so kind to calm my mom's fears in the night. Mom said she was very scared from a nightmare and she asked Shawna to sit with her and she did. This made a huge impact on my mom and I am sure helped her relax and heal faster.
A few days later when Shawna was charge nurse of the day shift, I came to her at the very end of her shift, (in fact I am pretty sure the shift was over) with a concern. Shawna responded immediately with such compassion and action. My mom was crying and scared and Shawna spent time listening to her and reassuring her. Shawna entered into my mom's pain/fear and showed amazing compassion. I will long remember the true kindness and care Shawna showed at the end of a long day.
