Shawnna's care reflected both the art and science of nursing. In the patient's words, Shawnna's knowledgeable explanations and calm demeanor gave her peace of mind even though things were not going how they had planned. The patient was seen in triage unexpectedly following a routine office visit to be evaluated for preeclampsia. Her assessment revealed that it was in the best interest of both mom and baby to be admitted for induction of labor. She was admitted, induced, and further augmented with an amniotomy, which revealed a breech presentation. Due to the breech presentation, an urgent cesarean section delivery ensued. The patient and her husband were admitted from the office and did not have any personal belongings. After the patient was prepped and en route to the operating room, Shawnna quickly bought a disposable camera and gave it to the father of the baby just in time before the delivery. The patient stated she is forever grateful for Shawnna's compassion and commitment to ensuring their birth experience was remembered as a joyous occasion.
