Shayla made me feel safe in a time when I was in so much pain that I couldn't think.
I am 95 years old and suffered a fall two weeks prior to my coming to the hospital. She was my day shift nurse who admitted me to the unit. She told me that she had to look at all my skin to make sure I didn't have any pressure sores, and she even complimented me on my skin!
She put pads on my bony back and bum to make sure I didn't get any sores while I was here. She checked in on me throughout her shift. She was the only one who did this during my 36-hour stay. She made sure I was comfortable and took the time to talk with me, making this old lady feel special.
I know what she did isn't earth-shattering, but the care I had the following 24 hours after she left wasn't anything like how she shone with the care she gave me. It's the little things, like talking to an elderly patient, that make all the difference in the world. I truly missed her after she left.
