The ED had an extremely difficult psych patient who was 19 years old and had new onset schizophrenia. The patient's mom and uncles were very engaged and present during the patient's entire stay. The patient escaped from his room pushing staff out of the way, did significant damage to the medic doors, ran down Harris Blvd, was caught and brought back by staff, CMPD, and Security. The patient's mom witnessed all of this and was dealing with a newly diagnosed schizophrenic son. Shayne developed a relationship with the mom, keeping her updated, having difficult conversations with her and the patient. He went over and beyond, even calling her after her son had placement to check on her and how her son was doing. Shayne's actions demonstrate what the DAISY Foundation was created to recognize, "extraordinary nurses who make an enormous difference in the lives of people".
