I have had the pleasure of working with Shean the past few years and witness her daily compassion for patients. As many units go, ours can be quite challenging and she is amazing with all patients and family she encounters. There is one patient that she truly demonstrated such empathy and grace.
This adult patient was dealing with some very difficult circumstances and had been here for a while. He was on one-to-one observation for a long time because of behavioral issues, on sedation and leather restraints. Shean's gentle touch, kind demeanor, and empathy allowed this patient to trust her and actually listen to her. He would go to procedures and would not require sedation or restraints.
During the shifts they were together, the patient opened up to Shean about difficulties he had encountered, and she was able to give the patient the care that he needed by communicating with physicians, case management, and psychiatry. She illustrated the importance of seeing the patient, stepping back, and remembering why you entered the field. May every unit be as fortunate to have a nurse as this nurse who is so full of compassion.
